Our Parents

Magda Sala Pagès. Born in Cantonigròs. An attractive, elegant, intelligent, generous, loving and kindly woman. She loved the city and hated winter, snow and the cold.

Pere Carbonell Casals. Born in Batet. A farmer, romantic, highly sensitive, a great reader, a dancer, interested in music and an opera lover. He loved the village, but he wanted to go and live in Barcelona.

Magda's parents
Chance had it that one very cold, snowy day our grandparents, during a pilgrimage to Núria on a donkey, prayed to Our Lady of Núria for no daughter of theirs ever, ever to end up here, in the village of Queralbs, but her destiny was already decided. Some aunts from Barcelona were the guilty ones, by introducing Pere to Magda, and of course they fell in love.
This was the beginning and the end of this story and the start of another. Mother went to live in the village, Father stayed and their children carried on...

The Old House

It was in the 1930s that our grandparents came from Batet and bought the house.

In the 40s there was a great rain storm. An enormous rock came crashing down, breaking through a very thick wall, making a hole in the roof and falling on our grandparents' bed, from which they had got up just ten minutes before.

In the 50s, after getting married, our parents settled in the village. Our grandparents' farmhouse was big, but it wasn't really a family home as more space was devoted to barns and cowsheds than to living in.
Father, even though he didn't like it very much, farmed. He worked the vegetable garden and the fields or picked potatoes and cut the grass in the meadows. Our parents had chickens, rabbits and about ten cows.

Memories

- At the start, when Father was very young, he walked down to the village with 30 litres of milk on his back. He went from house to house to sell the milk from his cows.

- Father milked the cows twice a day, morning and evening, and helped them to calve. This was a very exciting moment, which some guests were able to see. The calf would clamber to its feet alone and slowly make its way towards its mother, guided by smell, by contact with her skin and, as soon as it found the teats, would start suckling.

- Mother used to get angry with the cows because they ate her soap for washing clothes, or when their tails rubbed against the clean washing she had just hung out to dry.

- Speaking of clothes, our mother washed them by hand at the sink outside the house all year round, and in winter everything she hung out froze and the pieces of clothing went as hard as boards.
